How Your Metabolism Changes Throughout Life

Your metabolism is a complex thing! In simple terms, it’s a process by which your body converts the foods and drinks you consume into energy. Everyone’s metabolism is different and genetics play a big factor on how it runs.
In The Beginning
Your metabolism is typically at its highest when you’re first born. Babies have a high resting metabolic rate to support simple functions such as breathing, circulation and maintaining body temperature.
The same goes for your childhood years. Your metabolism as a kid remains elevated to support the energy needs of active play, growth spurts, and brain development. Your metabolism typically peaks during puberty because you’re going through a lot of hormonal changes.
Adulthood
Metabolism gradually begins to decline in adulthood. This decline typically starts during the late twenties or early thirties, and it’s primarily due to a decrease in muscle mass and a subsequent increase in body fat.
Another factor could be a decrease in physical activity because we’re not running around or engaging in active play like we were when we were younger. This varies wildly among people based on body composition, genetics and lifestyle habits.
Pregnancy & Childbirth
For the mums out there, your metabolism would have increased during pregnancy! This is just your body’s natural response to support the growth and development of the baby, as well as the increased energy demands put on your body. After birth, your metabolism may remain slightly elevated due to extra energy required for breastfeeding and simply caring for a newborn!
Menopause & Ageing
Metabolism tends to slow down with age, particularly after we go through menopause. Hormonal changes like a decrease in estrogen levels can lead to a decline in muscle mass and an increase in body fat, these changes contribute to a decrease in metabolic rate.
We can’t stop our metabolism from changing, it’s a natural part of ageing, but we can help it to run smoothly! Healthy lifestyle habits like regular physical activity and a nutritious diet can do wonders for your metabolism.
